By the time we got to the end, I was so involved in both of their stories that I couldn't put it down. ![]() I liked the realistic look both at the situation Andi was in and the French Revolution and what went on then. ![]() But, when her story began to intersect with Alexandra's, I think it got more interesting. At first, I did not have any interest in reading about Andi and the things that were going on in her life. This book was a really interesting way to learn about the French Revolution. ![]() But when she finds a diary from a young girl caught up in the French Revolution, she might get more from this trip than she expected. All she knows is that she needs to get back, even if it means finishing her school project on a French composer. When her father shows up and takes her to Paris for Christmas vacation, she is so angry she doesn't know what to do. Her mother is lost in grief, her grades are slipping, and she feels responsible for his death. We see Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie twenty years ago as they are recruited and trained by a showy extra-governmental agency called The Museum. There are two interwoven timelines throughout the book. Raybourn excels at strong female protagonists, and KILLERS OF A CERTAIN AGE brings us a marvelous quartet of strong and capable women served up with feminist pizzazz. She has written the Lady Julia Grey historical mystery series, which is an absolute joy, and is currently providing us with the fabulous Veronica Speedwell historical mystery series that features an intrepid and freewheeling lepidopterist-cum-sleuth. Nonetheless, the Big Topics are here: aging, death, greed, jealousy, the uses and abuses of love. “A Spool of Blue Thread” is firmly rooted in the particular circumstances of its characters, who don’t go in for fancy talk about abstract issues. In such midcareer masterpieces as “Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant” and in recent works like “Digging to America,” Tyler has proved again and again that a chronicle of middle-class family life in Baltimore can illuminate the human condition as acutely as any novel of ideas, albeit with a more modest demeanor. Over the course of 20 novels, Anne Tyler’s artistry has become so assured and invisible that her books often read less like fiction than dispatches from the real world. ![]() ![]() ![]() Maybe, I'm feeling rather murderous at the moment so will see.
